Ranchi, 18th October, 2021: Solar will now shine and bring prosperity amongst women farmers across Jharkhand. Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (JREDA), Government of Jharkhand is promoting the PM KUSUM Scheme in the state of Jharkhand to support activities that encourage women empowerment. JREDA has been promoting solar pumps for many years and Jharkhand has been a leading state to ensure that maximum beneficiaries reap the benefits.

Mr. K.K Verma, Director, JREDA said “As a state nodal agency, we are committed to promote renewable energy solutions in every spheres of economy including agriculture sector. The PM KUSUM scheme is being promoted to increase the farmer’s income through sustainable irrigation support to farmlands and enhancing agro output. The scheme is also expanded for women farmers which can bring in a range of benefits including qualitative changes in their lives with augmenting local enterprises activities in rural landscapes”.

Speaking of this initiative, Mr. Udit Mathur, Energy Advisor, British High Commission said “We look forward to working in partnership with JREDA to pilot gender focused interventions through the PM KUSUM scheme. By focussing on women’s awareness of the scheme and access to finance we can make the programme more inclusive, thereby increasing uptake and unlocking multiple developmental co-benefits for women farmers”

The field level mobilization is carried out by regional partner – SwitchON Foundation. The key activities include awareness creation among women about the potential of solar pumps, helping them filling and submitting the application at JREDA office, focused training of women farmers for maintenance of solar pumps and encouraging gender centric measures for women empowerment.

Mr. Vinay Jaju, Managing Director, SwitchON Foundation said “Solar pumps not only help save the extra toil and labor but can also enable women to double their income as we have seen in multiple states. Solar pumps can help in ensuring stable agricultural income and in securing livelihoods of women farmers.”

Under this program, NGOs, SHG groups would be mobilized and sensitized about the program and applications would be collected from the women farmers. This program is one of its kind in the state with a special focus on the regions of Santhal Pargana district in the state of Jharkhand – the area with the distinction of having the highest percentage share in the total tribal population of the state. This program would help women farmers in getting access to solar pumps which in turn would help improve their lives. A study done by SwitchON has shown that 40% of the farmers were able to diversify their crop due to sufficient availability of water. Also a 65% rise in their income was seen.

The PM KUSUM solar pump subsidy scheme mainly focuses on providing solar pumps (for both surface and submersible) at subsidized rates to the farmers. The subsidy pattern is the same for both surface and submersible pumps. Farmers can avail the benefits of this scheme by bearing the upfront cost of Rs 5000 for a 2 HP pump, Rs 7000 for a 3 HP pump and Rs. 10,000 for a 5 HP pump with the rest of the cost being borne jointly by the state and the central government. In case of submersible pumps, the boring has to be arranged by the farmers at their own cost or the farmer must have an existing boring.
