It is an established fact documented by urban transport planners that tramways or light rail systems are the ultimate solutions to the transit problems of all megacities. This is a truly global phenomenon that tramways are emerging in all cities across the continents irrespective of their economic conditions. All the cities that discontinued their tram services during the 1940 – 60s lament the fact and many of them have re-established their past glory but at a price.
Unfortunately, the enormous potency that Calcutta Tramways have in providing quality of socialized urban life in terms of clean air, decongestion of roads, safe – affordable – comfortable way of citizen’s mobility; the city of Calcutta is systematically destroying its priceless asset.
Further infrastructural facilities of Calcutta Tramways including manufacture of new rolling stocks already exist. Therefore, no major investment is required for restoration of the lost glory of the city tramways.
- The Transport Department, Kolkata Traffic Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation should change their step motherly attitude towards tram and take steps to run a sustainable tram services in the city of Kolkata.
- Immediate resumption of Esplanade – Kidderpore, route no 36, which is one of the busiest route of Kolkata and also offers the most picturesque slice of Kolkata which is closed since the Amphon messed up the overhead wiring in May 2020.
- Restore all existing tram routes that have been closed by one pretext or another, e.g, Judges Court Road, Sealdah flyover, Belgatchia overbridge etc.
- Increase tram frequencies (10 minutes) in all routes especially during pick hours of office time in the late morning and evening. We can confirm that the WBTC could easily increase tram frequencies by using many of the operational trams currently not in use, that are stored in tram depots.
- To create confidence in passenger’s mind the CTUA propose WBTC to publish a tram map, timetables for each route and new tram stop signs. We request that the WBTC displays them on the CTC website, Facebook, Instagram and at prominent tram stops and transit hubs so that commuters can get adequate information about the newly upgraded tram services.
