Workers on Cycle from Ranchi were felicitated today to celebrate the “International Day of Cycle to Work” and further promoting the forgotten ‘Jharkhandi Cycle Culture’.
Celebrating the day, 12 menial job workers like cooks, gardeners, printing press employees who ride their bicycles to work, gathered at Satya Bharti, Camil Bulcke Road with their cycles for the banner theme ‘Cycle is our Life” . Speaking at the event, one of the worker said “We are completely dependent on cycle for our daily commute to work as we cant afford expensive auto fare, beside it helps us to reach our destination quicker than other mode”
Among the felicitated were workers from Catholic Press: Ganesh Kujur, William Kujur, Alphonse Beck, Rajesh Kujur, George Soren, Pradeep Nagwar, Angelus Minj, Asit Lakra, Franklin Kerketta; From Manresa House Leonard Kerketta, Dominic Toppo, Simon Minj, Francis Toppo, Longius Ekka, Vineet Ekka, Barnabas Shandilya, Philip Samad along with other female livelihood cyclist Rajni Tapey fro Migrant Labour Control Room Jharkhand and Priya Shalini Minj a teacher from Prabhat Tara School.
The event was supported by a number of educational and business institutions who also joined the celebration organized by the Jharkhand Clean Air Network(CAN), initiated by city-based SwitchON Foundation.
Speaking at the event, Ex Tribes Advisory Council Member, Ratan Tirkey, said – “We really think it’s a fantastic idea to respect our cyclists to work and will certainly campaign across . Our housing society must make sure that there are separate parking arrangements for cyclists within our complex. We are committed to the cause of cycling and happy to support and be part of this international initiative with leading companies and communities to encourage and support cycling.”
Social Activist, Bhubaneswar Kewat said,” Climate Change is a reality the community across Jharkhand and the world is facing today. Use of Bicycle is one of the most effective way to combat city pollution as well as keeping people healthy. Government and network of companies must come forward to support the idea of building infrastructure in the form of bicycle parking, showers etc for employees opting for cycling to work, thus encouraging cyclists to travel and celebrate the spirit of cycling.”
Advocate at Hoffman Law Associates, Mahendra Peter Tigga urged,” We must recognize little things like livelihood cycling, which small people do that are often overlooked, but they hold a completely vast narrative on climate change and human compassion towards mother nature. We must acknowledge and promote it at different avenues.”
