Kolkata, 24th August : SwitchON Foundation and Energy Swaraj Foundation organized an orientation session on Climate Clock Assembly and Display with support from EarthDay Network to create a visual representation of the urgency in addressing climate change. Climate clock will serve as a constant reminder of the limited time we have to take meaningful action and motivate citizens to prioritize sustainable practices and policies.
The objective of the event was to bring awareness about climate change among masses and bring a sense of urgency to take ‘Action for Climate Correction’ through assembly and display of Climate Clock. A ticking clock in sight which brings a sense of dynamism and encourages action. It is a powerful tool for raising public awareness and engaging people in the fight against climate change. By making the issue more tangible and visible, it helps to increase understanding and drive action.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Vinay Jaju, Managing Director, SwitchON Foundation said, “I believe that the climate clock serves as a powerful reminder of the urgency to address climate change. By showcasing the time remaining to take meaningful action, it galvanizes communities, governments, and industries to adopt sustainable practices and make cleaner choices.”
According to the World Meteorological Organization, there is a 66% likelihood that the annual average near-surface global temperature between 2023 and 2027 will be more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year. There is a 98% likelihood that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, will be the warmest on record. The chance of temporarily exceeding 1.5°C has risen steadily since 2015, when it was close to zero. For the years between 2017 and 2021, there was a 10% chance of exceedance. Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, IIT Bombay addressed the audience and encouraged climate action..
The climate clock project uses a simple tool: a clock depicting the “deadline”-the critical time window for reaching zero emissions and the “lifelines”- tracking progress on key solution pathways. Using the carbon budget and time available for humanity before it reaches it. The climate clock concept aims to make citizens aware of the urgency for climate corrective action. Similar workshops on climate orientation and assembly will be organised in other districts of West Bengal.
Mr. Ajay Mittal, Director, India, and South Asia EARTHDAY.ORG said, “Climate clock is an opportunity for global action against Climate change. The climate clock not only raises awareness about the critical need of climate change but also inspires collective efforts towards a cleaner, healthier future for all.”
“As we collaborate, share knowledge, and support each other’s efforts, we pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient world. Together, we can mitigate the effects of climate change, protect vulnerable ecosystems, and ensure a brighter future for generations to come. Let’s stand united, inspire change, and drive positive action for the well-being of our planet” said Ms. Hira Prasad, Principal Birla High School-Mukundapur Kolkata.
