Kolkata Sustainability Summit, 30th January 2010

The first ever sustainability summit in Kolkata, bringing together policymakers, experts and youth, to discuss a action roadmap, on how to act on sustainable and equitable development.

•    Objective – Our unsustainable consumption and wasteful habits have brought life on earth to the brink, and caused a major divide between rich and poor.  We need to change business as usual and move urgently to a more sustainable and equitable forms of development

Program Schedule

10:00 - 13:00 | John Seed’s Presentation | John Seed, honored by the Australian Government with an “Order of Australia Medal” for his services to the conservation of nature. Mr. Seed through his presentation will share the following two themes - Deep Ecology and the Conservation of Nature, and How the Australian Rainforests were Saved - the Influence of Gandhi. This is the last of 30 lectures and presentations, he is giving in India in a tour organised by the Australia-India Council

13:00 - 14:00 | Lunch
14:00 - 18:00 | Interactive Tracks – A presentation of 5-10 mins by each speaker to be followed by an interactive Panel Discussion (Question and Answers). The action points from the above track will be created into a roadmap - which will be followed up by the participants after the summit.

•    Energy and Transport Track (14:00 – 15:30)– While fossil energy is considered a disaster for life on this planet – it continues to fuel our lives. From electricity to transport, we continue to burn more and more of coal and oil. We need to conserve this energy and move to more sustainable forms of energy – from electricity, cooking to transport.
Speakers – Dr. A.K. Ghosh (Centre for Environment and Development), Dipayen Dey (South Asian Forun for Environment), Dr. Anurag Dunda (WWF), Vinay Jaju (Kolkata Cycling Club / ONergy)

•    Water and Food/Agriculture Track (15:45 – 17:30)  – The advent of industrial age and a population explosion has put a massive stress on land and water resources. We must find ways to conserve and bring alternatives to unsustainable agriculture, food habits and use of water.
Speakers – Banani Kakkar (PUBLIC), Kapilananda Mondal (VSSU), Dr. Debal Deb (Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies) , Dr Sugata Hazra (Jadavpur Universtiy)
